What do you mean by safety culture?

Safety culture is the attitude and beliefs an organization and its employees have about safety. Safety is the core principle of the pipeline industry – every CEPA member’s number one priority. Every employee at every CEPA member company has safety ingrained into their jobs and their lives. When safety is always top-of-mind, everyone is aware of the known hazards, while remaining vigilant to new threats.

Creating a safety culture

A strong safety culture exists when safety becomes more than a mindset – it becomes a discipline that influences every CEPA member employee’s actions on the job. Safety first is always top-of-mind. Pipeline regulators know that building a strong safety culture is key to eliminating pipeline incidents, which is why CEPA members are committed to building a strong industry-wide safety culture.

Leading responsibly

Safety culture starts at the top. Every leader in the industry is obligated to demonstrate and communicate safety to all employees and contractors. They lead by example, ensuring that safety policies, practices and procedures are always followed. A strong safety culture comes from making sure that everyone – from the company president to the junior construction workers – are aware of work hazards and understand their responsibility in ensuring their own safety and that of others.

Training to keep safety standards high

Qualified and knowledgeable workers are safe workers. Training is constant in the pipeline industry to ensure that workers understand the proper procedures, standards and protocols to work safely. In addition, CEPA members work with organizations like Enform, the safety training association for the oil and gas industry, to continuously improve safety through training, guidance and certification.

Every employee has a role in developing a strong safety culture – from the executive team to a junior worker.

Keeping work sites safe

It’s a priority for CEPA members to have competent site supervisors on all work sites. These safety leaders ensure that regulatory requirements, company policies and safe practices are followed at all times. CEPA members are committed to meeting or exceeding worker safety regulatory requirements and industry-recommended practices on all work sites.

This goal is met by placing a high priority on:

  • Fully functional and well-maintained equipment
  • Emergency equipment and safety warnings
  • Worker personal protective equipment (PPE)

Workers are also trained, and encouraged, to refuse unsafe work.

Collaborating to make the industry safer

In conjunction with experts and facilitators, members work together to continuously improve their practices in workplace and public safety.
