Every employee at every CEPA member company has safety ingrained into their jobs and their lives. A strong safety culture exists when safety becomes more than a mindset – it becomes a discipline that influences every CEPA member employee’s actions on the job. Safety first is always top-of-mind. Pipeline regulators know that building a strong safety culture is key to eliminating pipeline incidents, which is why CEPA members are committed to building a strong industry-wide safety culture.
Safety culture starts at the top. Every leader in the industry is obligated to demonstrate and communicate safety to all employees and contractors. They lead by example, ensuring that safety policies, practices and procedures are always followed. A strong safety culture comes from making sure that everyone – from the company president to the junior construction workers – are aware of work hazards and understand their responsibility in ensuring their own safety and that of others.
Qualified and knowledgeable workers are safe workers. Training is constant in the pipeline industry to ensure that workers understand the proper procedures, standards and protocols to work safely. In addition, CEPA members work with organizations like Enform, the safety training association for the oil and gas industry, to continuously improve safety through training, guidance and certification.
It’s a priority for CEPA members to have competent site supervisors on all work sites. These safety leaders ensure that regulatory requirements, company policies and safe practices are followed at all times.
