Energy Connections: petroleum products in your medicine cabinet

In our Energy Connections series, we’re exploring some of the surprising ways we use petroleum products every day – for instance, in our toothpaste and on our shoes. This week we’re taking a look inside your medicine cabinet.

While it might not stretch the imagination to believe that petroleum jelly contains petroleum, did you know that there are many other products – and even medicines – that would not be easily possible without petroleum products?

It turns out that life without petroleum products could be more of a pain than many people realize!

The Canadian Energy Pipeline Association represents Canada’s transmission pipeline companies who operate approximately 119,000 kilometres of pipelines in Canada. In 2015, these energy highways moved approximately 1.2 billion barrels of liquid petroleum products and 5.4 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Our members transport 97 per cent of Canada’s daily natural gas and onshore crude oil from producing regions to markets throughout North America.
